In the autumn, early darkness is cozy, and early light wakes us; I remember during the 1970s experiment sleepy drivers, children walking to school in a preternatural night, and young and old both sagging at work stations and desks in the ghastly pallor of fluorescent lights.
You make an excellent point about the varying width of time zones causing people to fuss about what number is showing on their clocks when the sun comes up or goes down. My feeling is if school starts in the dark during the wintertime in Minnesota THEN CHANGE THE TIME SCHOOL STARTS !!
I suspect the conclusion of this utter idiocy of changing the clocks back and forth will be to split the difference between DST and Standard Time. We'll all be joining the Newfies in the middle!
Also, kids in plenty of northern European countries come and go to school in the dark! As far as I know, there isn’t a rash of child deaths in Scotland in January. It’s dark in the winter! That’s what makes it winter!
If all those FLOPS currently dedicated to making AI-generated memes were applied to One Clock to Rule Them ALL so that we could all operate on sun time but still schedule Zoom calls without difficulty, then the kids would be alright, the cows would get milked, and there would be peace in the world.
Curiously, other nations with huge east-west distances have not adopted DST, and so haven't clocked for themselves that the north-south curvature of the planet also matters. Only large population social studies, with a searching and thoughtful enquiry, might establish the relevance to industry, education, mass psychology etc.
I adapt by NOT changing, because my animal feeding is my primary activity. The government controls everyone else. For work I keep one clock with everyone else's time, my phone. Animals should not have to adapt when Congress changes the clocks, so they DON'T.
